State University of Malang (UM) originated from the Teacher Education College (PTPG) which was inaugurated on Monday, October 18, 1954, by JM Minister of Education, Teaching and Culture, Mr. Muh. Yamin and JM Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Indonesia Zainul Arifin. Determination to open PTPG starting September 1, 1954 as stated in the Decree of the Minister of PP and K dated August 4, 1954 No. 33756 / Kab, which was legally formally regulated in the Decree of the Minister of PP and K dated 1 September 1954 No. 38742 / Kab.
At the time of its establishment, PTPG in Malang had 5 departments with 127 students, which included: (1) Indonesian Language and Literature Department 20 people, (2) English Language and Literature Department 25 people, (3) History / Culture Department 19 people, (4) Department of Economics 35 people, and (5) Department of Natural Sciences 28 people (18 people for Science and 10 people for Life Sciences). On 10 November 1954 PTPG in Malang became part of UNAIR Surabaya. In 1958, PP No. 71 of 1958, regarding the change of PTPG to become the "Faculty of Teacher Training and Education" (FKIP), with the status of remaining part of Airlangga University.
On August 4, 1999, Presidential Decree Number 93 of 1999 was issued signed by President Bacharuddin Jusuf Habibie, concerning the Change of the Teacher Training and Education Institute (IKIP) to become a University. The prescriptions of the Presidential Decree include efforts to improve the quality, relevance, efficiency, equity and accountability of higher education nationally which need to improve its performance, especially regarding IKIP.
Based on the Organization and Work Procedure of State University of Malang, the administration is carried out by two bureaus, namely (1) the General and Finance Bureau (BUK), and (2) the Academic, Student, Planning, Information and Cooperation Bureau (BAKPIK). In its organizational structure, BAKPIK is led by one echelon IIa structural official (Head of Bureau), four echelon IIIa officials (Kabag), namely Head of Academic Affairs, Head of Student Affairs, Head of Planning and Information Systems, and Head of Cooperation and Public Relations, and nine echelon IVa officials (Kasubag) namely the Head of Sub Division of Registration and Statistics, Head of Sub Division of Academic and Evaluation, Head of Subag of Academic Facilities, Head of Subag of Interests, Reasoning and Student Information, Head of Student Welfare, Head of Planning, Head of Information Systems, Head of Cooperation, and Head of Public Relations.
